Denise Benitez

Hi there! My name is Denise Benitez (but you can call me Dee). Originally from NYC, I have called Sacramento home since 2008.

I am a studio artist emphasizing in sculpture which includes metal fabrication, installation art, and public art. Through sculpture, I have been exploring metals such as steel, copper, and aluminum, and venturing into mold-making with resin, vacuu-formed plastics, and plaster. I also incorporate industrial materials and found objects. I love to paint, draw, dabble in hand-built ceramics, as well as, work in graphic design and digital illustrations.

My current body of work is an ongoing examination of self-image, and its reaction to themes such as light and shadow, or femininity and masculinity, and other opposing forces which are currently being explored through sculpture, collage, and assemblage. As my work progresses and takes shape, so do the layers, much like my personal experiences form and build an enduring stratum upon my being. The art I make embraces concepts connected to ritual, effigies, ceremony, spirituality, and the internal self, existing alongside external influences. These are brought to life through the use of symbolism, patterning, and material usage.

About my traffic utility box design:

“Whispering Breeze” 2021

Original Medium: Mixed Media

I found my installation work, Whispering Breeze, an ideal complement to the new Natural Resources Agency Headquarters — addressing sustainability and nature through my art. This work, coupled with original digital design, is a continuation of that exploration of self-identity, ritual, and spirituality while utilizing materials that promote sustainability. Using items such as recycled egg cartons, yarn, string, copper strands, and recycled aluminum, I emphasize how art can be created in a thoughtful manner using materials that would otherwise serve a more utilitarian or industrial purpose, and not be seen as "art." Whispering Breeze is my personal reverence to the spirit of my elders, and to the natural elements. Blue honors the flowing waters while orange honors the healing Sun. The pulp honors Mother Earth and the metals found within the Earth honors inner strength. The suspended nature of the work honors the cleansing spirit of the air.

About my traffic utility box design:

“Demarcations” (Series of 12), 2020

Original Medium: Steel, aluminum, wood blocks, wood skewers, river rocks and gravel, glass beads and gems, string, thread, packing envelope, placemat fabric, mirrored squares, plastic rhinestones, and beads, photocopied images, spray paint, acrylic paint, glue. Sizes vary.

Demarcations is a series of hanging sculptures that explore the concepts behind ritual, ceremony, burial, and spirituality. The works serve as a reflection — and a reverence —  for seemingly ordinary objects and how they can be symbolic of the self. I represent the struggles of the human condition, as we search for love and purpose. Human existence is one that tends to be confined by the restrictions put upon it by societal norms, traditional values, and the status quo by carefully organizing the items within a constrained framework. The binding further forces that conformity to what is familiar and expected. However, the work represents a gradual awareness of the internal struggles, as there are moments of light, self-reflection, and breakthroughs allowing the eventuality of ascension as spiritual beings, all connected and full of love.
