Susan Silvester

Hello, my name is Susan Silvester, and I am an interdisciplinary artist based in Sacramento, California.

I specialize in digital drawing, painting, sculpture, alternative photography, and printmaking. I also have designed many public art pieces. The most recent is 5 permanent paintings installed at the Elk Grove Animal Shelter.

My work is created by using a variety of methods and materials. Influenced by art history, current events, pop culture, fairy tales, and my own childhood memories. The use of imagery, specifically children and adolescents, creatures such as bunnies, and imaginary landscapes are a vehicle to express emotions and their relationships.  Creating psychological response, rather than the literal story, I want the viewer to create their own stories.

About my traffic utility box design:

”The Golden River.”

Original Medium: My own digital drawings created on an iPad Pro using Procreate and on an Imac using Photoshop.

My thoughts on my design motivation was to incorporate the diversity of our community through the children and animals. I also wanted to create the background to incorporate the seasons we experience in our region that are all the scenes together by the golden river. This references our golden state, which gets it name from the fields of golden poppies and the gold rush. I also included many details that I hope a passerby will stop to examine and be inspired to create their own story.

Location: 10th and O Streets (legacy work from 2014)
